The Phoenix Project

Youth Council for Positive Development

The Youth Council for Positive Development (YCPD) was founded in 1980 and focuses on character development, academic achievement and community service. The mission is to provide academic enrichment and positive socialization in a culturally sensitive and safe environment. Their intent is to develop youth who are critical thinkers who will be engaged in the positive well-being of their community. The programs are based upon Ma’at Values and the Nguzo SabaKwanzaa Principles. Components of YCPD are the Ma’at Saturday program, the Youth Cultural Theatre, the Rites of Passage program and the Jamala Rogers Young Visionary Award. The slogan is “Building Character and Commitment to Community.”

The Phoenix Project will train youth in the 22nd Ward to interview and videotape residents who have lived in the ward for at least three generations. The oral histories will capture their hopes, dreams and challenges that give insights and appreciation into the inspiring lives of our elders. They hope the project spurs broader intergenerational and interracial conversations that deepen the collective understanding about our common humanity.
